What is a Trustee?

By Jan Ingram

Have you ever wondered why GCS has trustees or what they do?  Let me try to answer these questions by sharing from our Board of Trustees By-Laws and Standing Policies.

Grace Christian School is a ministry of Community Fellowship Church. The elders of CFC have chosen to utilize a Board of Trustees. Trustees hold the mission, and its future “in trust”.  The role of a trustee is future-focused and strategic.

Trustees profess Jesus as Lord and Savior and have a demonstrated interest in the ministry of GCS.  They must subscribe to the School’s statement of faith and pledge themselves to uphold the School’s mission and Christian core values.  They must be regular members of church that is in fundamental agreement with the School’s statement of faith. Trustees represent the school and are to conduct themselves as an example of what the school desires to produce in the lives of its students. Trustees will enroll their children at GCS, provided the school is able to meet the reasonable educational needs of those children.  At least one church elder or deacon of CFC will serve as a trustee.

The Board of Trustees is tasked with hiring, overseeing, evaluating, and terminating the Head of School, if necessary.  Trustees are to support, empower and affirm the Head of School. The Head of School is the one employee of the Board. All other employees report to the Head of School. The job of the trustees is to provide governance leadership and to pursue, through policy, the mission of the School and ensure these policies are implemented by the Head of School.

Trustees approve the budget and review monthly financial statements to ensure that the school is fully funded. Trustees are involved in establishing strategic targets/goals for the Development Program.

The Board of Trustees meet once a month.  Meetings begin with a devotion and a time of prayer.  Interceding on behalf of the teachers, staff, administration, students and their families is one of the greatest privileges of being a trustee.  Currently there are nine trustees serving on the board. Do you know these folks? You will see them at parent meetings, Grace events, volunteering in the classroom, coaching, or at staff/teacher appreciation days.
