Plans are worthless, but...

August 27, 2020
By Donald M. Larson, PhD

Thank you for your patience as we learn from the first days of school and are adapting our plans. General Eisenhower wrote:

Plans are worthless, but planning is everything. There is a very great distinction because when you are planning for an emergency you must start with this one thing: the very definition of “emergency” is that it is unexpected, therefore it is not going to happen the way you are planning.

I learned a long time ago that plans are a beginning point of departure. When I was a pilot in special operations, people often accused us of being cowboys, because we could adapt a mission, in flight, to address the changing scenario. The only reason we could change so easily is because we spent time planning different branches and sequels for every contingency that we could imagine. Even if a different event happened that we had not planned for, we were able to adapt because of our planning.

We have planned for the unexpected this year, but it has not happened the way we planned, as Gen Eisenhower so eloquently stated. So, we are adapting and moving forward with our eyes on our mission. Scientists and medical professionals are contradicting each other frequently, because everyone is still learning about COVID and how it operates. We are searching out the latest studies and are continuing to learn like everyone else.

The high school will reopen on Monday, August 31. The HealthCheck App is beginning to work well. We have created questions to address “yellow screens.” We will continue to update our plan as we face new challenges. Together in love, we can conquer our fears and prepare our young people to know God and to live in obedience to His will for their lives.
