Thinking Christianly Part 2 - Presuppositions

Biblical Worldview (BWV) begins with the understanding that the Bible is the infallible and inerrant Word of God and that a biblical perspective applies to every aspect of life. We as Christians have fallen into dualism and divided our lives into the sacred and the secular. To overcome this, we must have wisdom. Proverbs teaches us that fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge (Pr 1:7), and knowledge leads to understanding which then leads us to wisdom (Pr 9:10). Wisdom can help us to understand not only what a BWV is, but also help us to identify and understand other worldviews.

All worldviews or belief systems begin with certain presuppositions. Humanism and secularism begin with naturalism—the belief that the world came into being slowly over billions of years and that there is no supernatural cause for life. There is no scientific proof for this even though many state that it is fact. They confuse fact with belief, but what they have done is redefine words. They define “fact” as what they believe, whereas creation or intelligent design are associated with religion which is unscientific. All belief systems are religious in nature. The BWV presupposition starts with the first verse in the Bible, “In the beginning, God...” The Bible does not seek to prove the existence of God, it presupposes Him.

These presuppositions and beliefs shape everything in our lives. Our thoughts, words, and deeds are an outward flow of our foundational beliefs. We need to be studying and reading the Bible every day. We also need to know the other philosophies and what they teach. All of us unwittingly absorb other philosophies into our belief system without realizing it. This is called syncretism, and it is one of the primary sins for which God sent Judah and Israel into exile. We must step beyond being modern Americans and become biblical Christ-followers by building a solid Biblical Worldview!
